This past weekend, I popped my Comic Con cherry. I live in Southern California so you’d think that would’ve happened earlier, but I always thought I’d feel out of place there. I definitely have my nerdy side—Xena was my childhood idol, Buffy was my BFF, and I love Game of Thrones and all the new Marvel stuff—but that’s nothing in the nerd realm. Boyfriend is trying to nerdify me even further. I think my lack of Star Wars knowledge shames him 😉
Anyway, despite my reservations, I went and had a BLAST. First, the people watching there is better than a lot of TV shows. The costumes are out of this world. I can’t imagine the time they spent creating their costumes and doing their makeup. Just try Googling ‘Comic Con costumes’.
Okay now why did no one ever mention the parties? The parties there were phenomenal!! We partied on the USS Midway while watching MGMT. Then moseyed over to the Nerd HQ party, where my mind was blown. It was like an issue of US Weekly in there! I was on the dance floor with the cast of Game of Thrones, Marvel: Agents of Shield, Nathan Fillion, Seth Green, Jennifer Morrison, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Orlando Bloom. I was literally rubbing elbows with these people. Now why don’t I have photos with all these stars? Because a certain amazing celeb got me in, and I was trying to be blase about the whole thing. This was their getaway from the fans and I didn’t want to be “that girl.”
I did manage to snag this one of the whole event though–sorry it’s so dark!
Want to know the best part? Let me describe the moment that transformed me into a fan girl in .2 seconds. Picture me, all hot, sweaty, and bedraggled from sitting in the car for 2.5 hours, and maybe a little tipsy from a cranberry vodka. See it? Well, who walks into my hotel and goes for the elevators, but George R.R. Martin! As a writer who knows how hard it is to create an entirely new world and who’s struggled with managing complex story arcs, I am so in awe of this man.
Summary of the story? Go out and do something out of your comfort zone. It just might make for an awesome weekend 🙂
